Breakout Candidates For The 2023 Michigan Football Season

Michigan wide receivers: Expect 'a lot' from C.J. Charleston, other breakout candidates

Breakout candidates for the 2023 Michigan football season

C.J. Charleston

Redshirt sophomore wide receiver C.J. Charleston stood out in the spring and fall camp. He is expected to be a significant contributor in the passing game this fall.

In 2022, the Lakeland, FL native appeared in all 13 games, starting two games. He finished the season with 8 receptions for 73 yards.

According to U-M offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, "C.J. is a big, physical receiver who can make plays down the field. He has a good understanding of the offense and is a hard worker. We're excited to see what he can do this season."

Other breakout candidates

In addition to Charleston, several other wide receivers could be poised for a breakout season in 2023.

  • Junior Ronnie Bell
  • Redshirt sophomore A.J. Henning
  • Redshirt freshman Darrius Clemons

Bell is a former All-Big Ten selection who missed most of the 2022 season with a knee injury. He is expected to be back to full strength this fall.

Henning is a speedy receiver who had a promising freshman season in 2021. He finished the year with 11 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown.

Clemons is a highly touted recruit who reclassified into the 2023 class. He enrolled in January and participated in spring practice.

With the departure of Cornelius Johnson to the NFL, there are plenty of opportunities for these young receivers to step up and make an impact in the Michigan offense.
