Laporte's Header Proves Decisive
Manchester City defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the 2021 EFL Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on April 25, 2021, to win their eighth League Cup title, equaling Liverpool's record.
The only goal of the match came from Aymeric Laporte in the 82nd minute. The French defender rose highest to meet a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick and powered a header past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Laporte's goal was his first for City in the EFL Cup and proved to be the winning strike in a closely contested match.
Guardiola Praises City's Resilience
"I'm so happy for the players and the club," said City manager Pep Guardiola after the match.
"We showed great resilience and character to win this match. Tottenham are a top team and we had to fight hard for the victory."
City's victory was their fourth in the EFL Cup in the past five years. They have now won the competition more times than any other team in history, level with Liverpool.
Tottenham Disappointed but Proud
Tottenham manager Ryan Mason was disappointed with the result but proud of his players' performance.
"We gave it everything we had but it wasn't enough on the night," said Mason.
"Manchester City are a great team and they deserved to win. But I'm proud of my players for the way they fought and never gave up."
